The city of Jefferson has learned it will receive a $34,000 grant from the US Department of Agriculture for equipment at the new animal facility.
The grant application was written by volunteer grant writers for the animal facility committee.
Including the grant, the total raised is just more than $500,000. There are several grant applications still outstanding and some individuals are stepping forward with private donations to make the animal shelter and dog park a reality.
According to the fundraising committee, some grant monies are time sensitive – it will revert back to the grantor if it isn’t used by a deadline. The goal is to get the remainder of the needed $1.1 million raised and start construction in 2020.
There are many opportunities to donate. Donors (an individual or group) could be recognized or honored by signage adjacent to an animal facility room, a piece of equipment, or an entire room.
Persons who are interested in donating to the project can contact the city of Jefferson at 515-386-3111. “When the community works together, great things happen,” a committee spokesperson said.
